WHAT DOES "SMA Dōjō" MEAN ?

SMA Dōjō is short for Shingikan Martial Arts Dōjō. In its original Japanese language, Shingikan is written 心技館, and is pronounced shin-gi-kan. The Chinese character for "shin" 心 means heart (dedication, perseverance or fortitude), "gi" 技 means skill (technique or ability) and "kan" 館 is the place of training. In short, Shingikan means the place where one trains with perseverance in the development of one's abilities in order to become a master of their skill.

                                                                                                                 直心これ道場なり

(Jikishin Kore
Dōjō Nari)
“A pure and true heart becomes the
dōjō.”

The training hall, the Dōjō, was a place where one went to study, practice and learn about the truth and the nature of one’s existence. The Chinese characters for
Dōjō are 道場.  道 is pronounced "dō" but can also be read as "michi" in Japanese. "Michi" means road or pathway. 場 is pronounced "jō" means castle, great structure or a place of importance. Therefore the word dōjō represented a place of significance where someone went to travel on a path to understand one's true self. Not only was the dōjō established on philosophical/religious ideals, but it was also a place of simplicity that provided no frivolous or worldly distractions.

Much like the traditional dōjō, Shingikan Martial Arts Dōjō will challenge the practitioner to explore one’s own desires and delusions, and will provide purposeful training to develop a mind and spirit that is not easily disturbed. Our goal is to encourage an environment that is based on the search for Truth, and through nutrition, training and healing, holistically support the mind, body and heart to achieve its highest potential.

We are not just another martial arts studio. We are a true Dōjō.  At SMA Dōjō, Iai, Jodo, Judo, Karate, Kenjutsu, Boxing,   Brazilian Jiu Jitsu  (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA),  Muay Thai and Tai Chi are practiced.

THE SHINGIKAN WHOLISTIC APPROACH

Shingikan Martial Arts Dōjō offers programs for all ages and ability, as well as private lesson, with the purpose of encouraging a healthier more active lifestyle regardless of your age or ability.

The Shingikan principles of self-improvement do not begin and end at the doors of the
Dōjō. It's important to understand that simply because you're not physically in the dojo that everything comes to a stand still.

On the contrary, the real battle occurs in every day living. Every day one must remain vigilant about nutrition, proper recovery, and maintain peace of mind and heart to support our training.

Your goal might be fitness, to build your body strength, endurance and flexibility. It might be to compete as a hobby or to become a professional fighter. Your goal might also be to shed that winter layer, to climb the flight of stairs at work effortlessly, or to regain a bit of a healthier physique.  It might also be able to finally sleep soundly at night,  or to be able to spend a day without discomfort or pain. The goal might be to find a greater sense of confidence, peace and security.

Either way nutrition and healing are important for everyone, and even more so for the competitor or martial arts practitioner. Proper nutrition is crucial to not only help keep you focused but to also help your recovery from session to session.  The difference between victory and defeat could come down to who has greater speed, stamina or strength. It is for this reason that Shingikan Martial Arts
Dōjō has its own in house PN1 certified Nutrition Coach and personal trainer.

To support all of its members, Shingikan Martial Arts
Dōjō also has a professional DONA trained Doula and Certified prenatal and postnatal Yoga Instructor to help  expectant mothers and athletic mothers (whether competitively minded or not) during their pregnancy, labour, and postpartum periods. To be of service to all women, whether in recovery, wanting to maintain good health, or increase their vitality, we provide support to improve lifestyle, diet and  fitness through the martial arts.

Our Certified Nutrition Coach, professional DONA trained Doula, certified Yoga Instructor and Food Safety certified personel are available for private consultations and lessons.

By providing nutritional and healing support at the "Kenko
Dōjō
", the training gym's kitchen, we will encourage you to achieve a healthier, more balanced and energised body.

             "Shingikan Martial Arts
Dōjō's approach to training is simply wholistic !"
